We mourn the loss of our Fellow Robert Castel

Robert Castel, Research Director of the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (EHESS) and Fellow of the Research Group on post-growth societies, died on March 12, 2013 at the age of 79.

With the death of Robert Castel the social sciences lose a bright and critical scholar. His work on the development of wage labor and on precarity and exclusion were and are important points of reference for the discussions of our Research Group. Robert Castel gave important impulses and was a keynote speaker at workshops and projects on 'precarity as a sociological concept'. He also had a very personal connection with Jena: during one of his last stays here he visited the Buchenwald Memorial and wrote this text.

We already planned his next stay in Jena and were happy about the opportunity for new debates. Full of sadness we say goodbye to Robert Castel. Our thoughts are with his family.

An obituary by Klaus Dörre and Tine Haubner entitled 'Ein scharfsinniger Analytiker sozialer Verwundbarkeit' was published in the April edition of 'Sozialismus' ( 4-2013)  and can also be read here (in German).
